AKHNOOR, June 18: A large number of local residents gathered at the main chowk, Sungal Morh in Akhnoor today and demonstrated against the tax and police authorities who claimed to be hand in hand with some elements encroaching on a shop located in the main market at midnight.
Residents of Sungal Morh market have closed their shops in protest in favor of Madan Lal, a trader whose shop was allegedly overrun at midnight. The aggrieved shopkeeper alleged that there was a dispute between him and another party for the store over which the case was already pending in court. He said he has owned the said store for 7-8 years, but on Thursday night goons broke the store’s locks and looted the goods and encroached on the store.
He said tax and police authorities were notified but did not respond in time, which forced them to hit the roads today. Protesters blocked the main road for some time, demanding tough action against the culprit.
Meanwhile, SDPO Varun Jandyal and SHO, Hilal Azhar arrived at the scene and persuaded the protesters and hired them for talks and in the presence of city dignitaries, after which they closed the store and handed over the key to Tehsildar Surinder Singh. It was decided that on Monday the matter would be resolved.
