BALASORE: The Revenue Inspector (RI) of Sajanagard circle under Nilagiri tehsil K Santosh Kumar was allegedly assaulted by stone quarry mafia in Swarnachud reserve forest on Monday. During the attack, the assailants ripped off Kumar’s shirt and the RI had to walk naked for four kilometers to buy new clothes at the local market. Sources said that after being informed of the illegal stone quarrying in Swarnachud forest, Kumar rushed there on a motorbike in the afternoon. After reaching the place, he started capturing the illegal activities on his cell phone.

Suddenly stone mafia Biswanath Das and his son attacked him. They ripped off the RI’s shirt, smashed his mobile phone and snatched his wallet before threatening to kill him if he did not leave immediately. Leaving his motorbike there, a shirtless Kumar ran away in fear and reached the nearest market on foot. After buying a new shirt, he met Nilagiri tehsildar Ashesa Kumar Nayak and informed him about the incident.

The tehsildar told the media that a complaint will be filed against the people who attacked the RI. In addition, raids will be carried out on stone crushing units operating illegally in the area with the help of the forest department and local police.

When contacted, Nilagiri IIC Gopal Krushna Karna said that the police have not yet received any complaints in this regard.
Sources said the mafia had set up illegal crushing units and were carrying out rock blasting as they cleared large swaths of the reserve’s forest. Illegal stone quarrying poses a threat to wildlife and also hinders animal movement.
