Tripura legal metrology department collects revenue worth Rs 1.66 Crores: Minister

Agartala, July 21, 2022: The Legal Metrology Department checked the weights and measuring instruments of 39,198 traders in the 2021-22 financial year and 486 people were charged with penalties for various issues while the department collected Rs 1.66 crore in revenue, said Food, Civil Wednesday, Supply and Consumer Affairs Minister Manoj Kanti Deb.

Meanwhile, the Legal Metrology Department also monitored the markets during the statewide COVID-19 pandemic lockdown period to protect consumer interests. However, the department collected Rs 9,86,500 from 267 traders as punishment for deceiving customers.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Standard Laboratory Building of the Legal Metrology Organization at the Mohanpur SDM office premises, Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, Deb, said: “The Department of Legal Metrology plays an important role in consumer protection in the state. It is the responsibility of this department to ensure that the weight of the packed goods is correct, that the packed goods are not sold at prices higher than the printed price, etc. With the opening of this office, traders in Mohanpur sub-division will be able to enjoy various facilities from here.

He said, “The Legal Metrology Department carried out verification of weights and measuring instruments of 39 thousand 198 traders in the last financial year while 486 people were fined due to issues in this case. Last year, the revenue received by the office was Rs 1 crore 66 lakhs. Furthermore, during the Covid-19 lockdown, regular surveillance was maintained on the markets by the department to protect the interests of buyers and Rs 9 lakh 86 thousand 500 was collected from 267 traders who broke the law.

Speaking on the show, Education Minister and local MP Ratanlal Nath said, “The current state government has taken initiatives to put the administrative facilities in the hands of the people. Various measures have already been taken to this effect. Every department of the state government is working so that people can get various administrative facilities very easily.

He said that a total amount of 24 lakh 86 thousand rupees has been spent for the construction of this office building. The Minister of Education also said that the state government is working with the slogan “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Prayas”. There are various programs in various departments of the central government and state governments. The facilities of these projects are delivered to people from different sections of society. Various departments try to ensure that the common people have no problem in enjoying the benefits of various schemes.

In this program, Food Department Secretary Sharadindu Chowdhury delivered a welcome speech and Department Director Tapan Kumar Das delivered a vote of thanks. President of Mohanpur Panchayat Samiti, Reena Debbarma presided over the ceremony. Mohanpur City Council Chairperson Anita Debnath, Deputy Chairperson Shankar Deb, Mohanpur SDM Aniruddha Roy and others were present.
